SMALL ADS

Various magazines - 1940s and '50s

If you blink you could miss the small ad, as they're usually tucked away in tiny spaces at the back of magazines, and even if you do bother to get a magnifying glass out to read them, you'll find them so badly drawn and designed that you'll wonder if it was worth the effort. But rather than tossing them on the Tack-O-Rama reject pile ('cos - let's face it - it's a pretty small pile) I thought we should celebrate these tiny marvels of vintage advertising history. Either that or you can skip to the next section. It's a free world, buddy!

It's the world's first heterosexual mop!

....but a smart apron for everyone else....

....and a foundation garment....or maybe

it's for bivouac-ers?

Corns killing you? Not as much as this artwork.

This woman's superfluous hair is so pronounced, it can be seen from across the dancefloor!

More from a generation obsessed with hair removal.

Don't pull hair from your nose - use this medieval

torture device instead!

Apparently in times gone by, fat wasn't reduced by good, old-fashioned exercise - you vibrated it away....

....or washed it away.

The Venus Bust Improver - these days we call them Kleenex.

"Eliminate stair-climbing drudgery...." Here's something for the lazy sod in all of us.

The faithful ol' rupture ad has always made me giggle....but then again, I'm juvenile.

I'm at a complete loss as to how this item never took off - shoe baggies.

The mid 20th-Century - a very precipitous period by all accounts.

Mrs. P. Ramsay of L.A. Calif. is not a woman who acts on impulse....

A simple handyman project. Although with this perspective, it's unlikely you'll be able to sit in it.

Not really a small ad, but it gets a place just for the horror of it all.

NO HOOKS! NO PINS! For your monthly peace of mind, Madam.

What happens when events at Roswell influence modern design.
