SHE SHOULDA SAID NO!

The Photoplayer - 1951

“She Shoulda Said No!” is a film that dares to tell the truth about the dreaded sex-drug cigarette, marihuana. The use of the drug, especially among young people, is increasing in America to a marked degree and it is certain that this picture, which tells the story from the first “reefer” to its appalling consequences, the insanity of one of its young victims, will be seen as a frightening lesson.

Heading the Hollywood cast is blonde Lila Leeds, the girl who knows the truth about marihuana, for it was Lila who was involved with actor Robert Mitchum in the notorious narcotics case which ended in jail sentences for them both.

“She Shoulda Said No!” introduces the plausible Markey as a ruthless peddler of the illegal drug. He sells it indiscriminately to the young people in his town and his actions result in the death of three people when their car crashes. This leads the police and State Narcotics Bureau to set about investigating the source of marihuana.

It is to be understood that “She Shoulda Said No!” tells a story which could happen to anyone who uses the drug. It is a Hallmark Production, released through British Empire Films.

ABOVE: Lila Leeds, the star of “She Shoulda Said No!” served a jail sentence as a result of her implication in marihuana traffic. Since that time her name has been banned from all film credits and she appeared anonymously in this film when it was released in America.

1.  Marihuana peddler Markey becomes interested in Ann (Lila Leeds), a showgirl in a nightclub. By threatening to withhold the drug from one of the girl addicts he forces her to give a party to which Ann is invited.

2.  Ann is attracted to Markey who tells her that if she stays with him she will have enough money to put her kid brother through college. At first Ann stays aloof from the other marihuana addicts at parties but eventually succumbs to the drug.

3.  The morning after a hectic marihuana party at her house Ann’s brother comes home unexpectedly to find the house in chaos and a half-drugged man on the couch.

4.  A few nights later he surprises Ann at another marihuana party and realizes the truth. Next morning she finds that he has hanged himself.

4.  The police catch up with Ann but Markey escapes. She is taken on a round of institutions to show the effect of the drug on human beings, and in prison the knowledge that she had virtually killed her brother causes her to lose her sanity. She recovers and with her help Markey is eventually arrested and his racket annihilated.
